How to set up your new PS4 console

Learn how to set up your PlayStation®4 console for the first time, update the system software and connect to PlayStation™Network.

Connect PS4 console to a TV

  1. Insert one end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI OUT port on the rear of the PlayStation 4.
  2. Insert the other end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI input on your display device.
  3. Insert the power cable into the AC IN connector on the rear of the PlayStation 4.
  4. Safely insert the power plug into a mains electrical outlet.

If you will be connecting your PlayStation 4 to the internet via a wired connection, you can now connect an Ethernet cable between the LAN port on the rear of the PlayStation 4 and your router or modem.

Update PS4 system software

Before you can access any online features of the PlayStation 4, the system software needs to be updated to the latest version. System software updates begin downloading automatically as soon as they are available, and an on-screen notification will inform you when it is ready to install.

Connect to PlayStation Network

If you are already a PlayStation user you can use your existing account details to sign in. If you are new to PlayStation, you can easily use your PlayStation 4 to create an account.

Download and access PS4 games and apps

You can download games and apps from the PlayStation™Store or use a game disc to install a game.

Start playing online with PS4 

Some games require a PlayStation®Plus subscription to access online multiplayer. To play online with your friends, as well as gain access to a variety of other benefits, you can subscribe to PlayStation Plus.
